Exploring the diverse financial challenges facing today’s decision-makers, this module is a comprehensive introduction to accounting and financial analysis. Design Thinking: From Design Thinking to Agile Product Development (I) (1 unit)

This module allows participants to acquire hands-on experience by going through a Design Thinking process: from empathizing the user experience to defining users’ needs, generating alternative ideas building and testing prototypes, finally arriving at a feasible solution ready for implementation. Throughout these different stages, Agile Product Development will be integrated into the design process for producing quantifiable metrics to steer product market fit. Design thinking focuses on a deep dive into the user experience to identify the right problems to address, whereas agile product development approach the latter focuses on generating quantifiable measures to help prioritize the allocation of resources for implementation.

Design Thinking: From Design Thinking to Agile Product Development (II) * (1 unit)

The module will explore how integration between Design Thinking and Agile methodologies may maximize the effectiveness of product development processes. Participants will gain hands-on experience in applying Design Thinking principles, starting from empathizing with the user experience and progressing through the stages of defining user needs, generating alternative ideas, building and testing prototypes, and ultimately arriving at feasible solutions ready for implementation. An innovative aspect of this module is its incorporation of Agile Product Development alongside Design Thinking. In this module we shall explore how superior customer service can differentiate your business in the marketplace. Consideration is given to legal and regulatory compliance, risk management, and ethical considerations in data collaboration. The module provides participants with an overview and the foundation of emerging trends in Decentralized Finance (DeFi), the Web3, and green fintech technologies. Using a variety of examples, the course examines the latest developments and innovations in DeFi and Web3, exploring their impact on various industries and the broader digital landscape. The will also discuss environmental sustainability issues and how emerging technologies are used to support the green agenda. In particular, we will examine application of fintech in the carbon credit market and green bond market. Overall, the module aims to broaden our horizon by looking into the future possibilities created by the DeFi, Web3, and green technologies.

Cyber Security and Risk Management (1 unit)

This module provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the principles, practices, and strategies involved in protecting digital assets and managing cyber risks. The module explores the evolving threat landscape, cybersecurity frameworks, risk assessment methodologies, and effective risk mitigation techniques.

Contemporary Topics of Technology Applications for Financial Services (1 unit)

It offers an in-depth exploration of the latest trends and advancements in technology applications within the financial services industry. This module provides students with a comprehensive understanding of how technology is transforming various aspects of financial services, including banking, insurance, investment, and risk management. Participants will examine cutting-edge topics such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, big data analytics, and cybersecurity, and their impact on financial operations, customer experience, and regulatory compliance. Industry practitioners will be invited as guest speakers to share their entrepreneurial experience in fintech with participants.

Financial Technology Application: Project (1 unit)

The module provides participants with the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in financial technology (FinTech) to real-world projects. Through hands-on learning and project-based assignments, participants will apply their technical and analytical skills to address complex challenges and deliver impactful FinTech projects. The module involves a significant research and / or development project under the supervision of an academic staff in any area of financial technology. At the end of the course, the participant must give a presentation to the academic supervisors, and submit a report detailing the findings and deliverables. The participant’s grade will be determined by the presentation and the report.

Fundamentals of Business Sustainability (1 unit)

Participants will explore the environmental, socioeconomic, and infrastructural challenges brought about by climate change, deforestation, and consumption over the past decade. The module emphasises the urgent need for both public and private sectors to adopt sustainable practices to meet the needs of future generations. The introductory module of programme familiarises participants with the basics of climate change, its impact on the environment and society, and the role of businesses in addressing these challenges. Participants will gain insights into sustainability issues on a global scale and learn about key international initiatives aimed at mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable development. The module highlights how sustainable development has been progressing globally and specifically in Hong Kong, offering valuable insights into local sustainability efforts and initiatives.

Sustainability Communication Strategy (1 unit)

This module is designed to provide participants with a competent understanding of corporate sustainability communication in general and through corporate sustainability reporting in particular, in a context of growing importance of corporate sharing of sustainability information in a globalizing business world. It will start with a visit on the concept of sustainability communication with the focus on purposes and approaches companies should conduct sustainability communication from a stakeholder perspective. It will then give a comprehensive coverage of employing sustainability reporting, with the currently focus on ESG, as a primary mechanism for stakeholder engagement and communication.

Sustainability Communication: ESG Rating and Reporting (1 unit)

This module is designed to provide participants with a competent understanding of corporate sustainability communication in general and through corporate sustainability reporting in particular, in a context of growing importance of corporate sharing of sustainability information in a globalizing business world. It will start with a visit on the concept of sustainability communication with the focus on purposes and approaches companies should conduct sustainability communication from a stakeholder perspective. It will then give a comprehensive coverage of employing sustainability reporting, with the currently focus on ESG, as a primary mechanism for stakeholder engagement and communication. It will conclude by bringing out the business relevance and business value of sustainability reporting in regard to sustainable investing and corporate sustainability rating.

Contemporary Topics in ESG (1 unit)

This module focuses on the timely themes and special issues in the field of management in relation to global business and sustainability. It includes, but is not limited to, emerging trends in human capitals and customers experience, strategic management in AI-powered environments, creating shared values, and natural resources management. The module emphasizes the importance of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors in ensuring the long-term sustainability of businesses. The module aims to provide participants with the knowledge and understanding of climate change risks and opportunities and their impact on capital markets. Topics will cover circular economy, core climate-economic theory and the role of central banks and supervisory authorities, climate change and equity investment opportunities, climate change risk management. The module begins by introducing the concept of social sustainability and its significance in the context of business. This module offers a panoramic overview of resource consumption and introduces participants to planetary boundaries, current resourcing challenges, and how climate change, biodiversity loss and humanity have affected natural resources. It also equips participants with an in-depth understanding of environmental impact assessments and potential solutions to overcome resourcing challenges.

Sustainable Supply Chain and Circular Economy (1 unit)

In recent years, a number of organizations have fallen victim to supply-chain vulnerabilities and disruptions, and businesses are increasingly acknowledging the urgent need for sustainable supply chain for risk mitigation. As the world slowly begins its transformation into a carbon-resilient world, it is clear that our current linear economy must also transition into a circular economy to reduce environmental pressure and become more resilient. This module focuses on two main areas: 1) the importance of sustainable supply chains in managing risks and achieving decarbonization, and 2) the adoption of a circular economy mindset to improve resource efficiency. Environmental and Climate Policies in China (1 unit)

This module will provide a systematic understanding of China’s environmental and climate policies. It will first examine China’s major environmental and climate issues, including indoor and outdoor air pollution, water shortage and pollution, soil pollution, waste management, desertification & deforestation, climate change, energy transition and carbon neutrality. The organization of China’s environmental and climate governance will then be explored. This module examines how AI is transforming logistics into a more efficient and eco-friendly industry. Participants will learn about AI-driven solutions that address environmental and operational challenges, promoting sustainable supply chains. Through case studies and practical applications, the course highlights AI’s role in enhancing green logistics, including energy-efficient route optimization, eco-friendly transportation, and smart warehousing. Participants will also explore emerging technologies like machine learning and Generative AI that help logistics companies achieve sustainability while maintaining operational excellence.

Entry Requirement: Holders of a Bachelor’s degree from a reputable university or equivalent professional qualifications

Graduation Requirement: To be awarded Professional Certificate in Modern Business, participants are required to have an overall attendance rate of 70% of each module and pass the assessments of each module with a letter grade not lower than Grade C
