[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=”4.24.3″ _module_preset=”default” global_colors_info=”{}”]As novelist Chimamanda Adichie puts it, \u2018the problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete.\u2019 Given that stereotypes are part of our mental makeup, this course aims to provide some reflection and practice in real\/vicarious intercultural encounters, so that you could at least take steps to \u2018complete\u2019 our pictures. In this course, you will critically analyze intercultural scenarios and anticipate possible courses of action through readings, videos, discussions, and role-plays with individuals from other cultures. Discussion topics include language and identity, communication and culture, cultural influences on interaction\/ relationship-building in a variety of contexts, and nonverbal communication.<\/p>\n
Intercultural communication can be exciting and eye-opening; but it can also be painful and \u2018dangerous\u2019. It is normal that we make mistakes when testing hypotheses and we help each other learn from these mistakes.<\/p>\n
